A tense and atmospheric romantic thriller set in Corfu.
Val Baker, tough but loving, restores musical instruments, but her relationship with her Greek-Italian family on Corfu is broken beyond repair. When she is commissioned by her old friend Alexia to restore a rare giraffe piano, she returns to the island to find her dreams haunted by memories of Hilary, a young English girl raped and murdered 10 years before. Val determines to uncover the truth about the case, and set to rest her own doubts about the involvement of her father, Yiannis, and half-brother, Markos, both policemen who were involved in the original investigation.
Joined by her friend Harry, Val begins to unravel the threads. Then two strange tokens arrive, one for Alexia's daughter Chloe and one for Val, and it becomes clear that Hilary's unknown killer is on Val's trail. Her search for the truth becomes a race for life.

'She was dreaming a murder and her dream was true... She knew too much about this murder, a killing which had disillusioned her father. He should not have lifted and copied the murder file from the police station in Corfu town and she, Val, should not have looked at it. Hillary had been an acquaintance and Val had been curious and horrified.'And so, the author, Lindsay Townsend, slowly drew me in with those words in the first chapter, leaving me wanting to know more.
Val Baker, who repairs musical instruments, is haunted by her past, a murder, and the impossible task of repairing her broken relationship with her Greek-Italian family, involving her father and half brother, who are both policemen, as she tries to piece together her dreams, memories, and evidence to solve what really happened to her friend, Hillary, ten years earlier.
This is well-written, suspenseful, and a complex mystery that has you second guessing yourself, just as Val does throughout the story. This talented author never let this reader down by upping the anti with each succeeding chapter, right up until the emotional and unexpected ending.

The English Daughter (Audible Audio Edition) Lindsay Townsend Michelle Ford AudioLark Audio Books Books Reviews
"The English Daughter," by Lindsay Townsend is a beautifully written romantic suspense novel showing the same mastery of the genre as Phyllis A. Whitney in her novel "Hunter's Green".
How do I explain the significance of this style of writing? Scenes so well crafted I can see the characters in my mind's eye. Flowing movement of the players in quiet desperation to escape an evil force that is not fully identified until the very end.
"The English Daughter," is about life and death with a tender romance that heals Val's self-image. The love scenes are tasteful and allow for imagination - they are not the focus of the tale. The mystery of Val's dreams and the unknown killer is the purpose of the telling.
First, I traveled to Corfu in Val's dream - vivid and dark, where she witnesses a crime she could not have seen. Then I arrive in the beautiful Corfu - a place I've never been but feel as though I've been there through the brilliant depictions designed by Lindsay.
Beautiful landscapes, towns and intense sunlight is the backdrop where the crime was committed. Lindsay also uses Val's vocation of piano restorer in the narrative. She weaves the intricacies of restoring wood to its original unblemished state into the healing of her cast.
Why do I recommend this book to all that enjoy romantic suspense? The account of Val's life and travels in the here and now and in her dreams brings fulfillment to me as a reader. All of Lindsay Townsend's work has had this impact on me. Her writing is a reminder to me of why I love reading books. Examing her work now takes me back to the stories I read as a teenager finding ideas of stories I'd like to explore from my Grandma Effie's book of the month club. When yarns were written to engage the reader and take them on an adventure of discovery. "The English Daughter," is a story that appeals to all generations and all genders. I hope you take the time to look up this book and take a trip to Corfu.
I enjoyed the audiobook production of this story as well. The narrator, Michelle Ford, does an excellent job of telling the account. Her voice is very melodic keeping me absorbed in the descriptive tale as I listen to it over and over.
In this cleverly plotted, Who Done It?, set in Corfu, Val Baker’s family is dysfunctional.
Ten years ago, her grandfather took Val to a recital, given by the world-famous pianist, Stefan Gregory, where she met Hilary. Later Val and Hilary went to a café where they drank coca cola. An unknown man sent more drinks to them. Although they refused them the man sent a message. He would meet them on the following day at the café. Neither he nor Hilary arrived. Two days later, Val read in the newspaper that Hilary’s murdered body had been found in the grounds of The Achillion, a classical villa.
Ten years later, Val, widow of Nick, a plainclothes detective, returned to Corfu for her annual holiday. Unable to forget Hilary’s murder, regardless of her own safety and that of those she loves, she wants to find out who the murderer is.
Instead of staying at her family’s house, she stays at her friend’s villa.
Townsend has created an unforgettable cast of believable characters, among a few of whom are
Harry, a plainclothes detective, who was Nick’s best friend, is in love with Val, an instrument restorer, and follows her to Corfu.
Markos, Val’s half-brother, a policeman in the homicide department, who forced a far from brotherly kiss on her when she was thirteen and called her Sweet Lips. On the day she and Harry visit her family, Markos announces that another woman’s murdered body has been found at The Achillion.
Val’s late grandfather, also an instrument restorer, who left letters for Val that fuel her suspicions about Markos.
Stefan Gregory, a world-famous pianist with a house at Corfu. He particularly admires madrigals written by Carlo Gesualdo, the sixteenth century Italian prince a fresh and inventive composer of his day, who murdered his wife in the 1580’s. Stefan describes him as prince in life, a god of music.
The author has written a page turner with many red herrings to confuse the reader, and neatly tied up all the knots in the tale.
Townsend also slipped in evocative descriptions of Corfu and details about its history.
If you enjoy well-written Who Done Its? I am confident that you will enjoy The English Daughter.
