Living sustainably on the Earth Is this possible? David Chapman thinks so but argues that it requires the human race to rethink itself and to become a new species. This is the central paradox, humanity will only survive through metamorphosis. The qualities that have brought Homo sapiens to the beginning of the twenty first century contain the germinating seeds of our own destruction.
Humanity lives in denial of some basic natural laws. We cannot have infinite growth in a finite space. Populations that grow unchecked outstrip their resource bases and collapse. Technology can only postpone the inevitable.
While the author canvasses a great deal of difficult terrain in mounting his argument, this book is infused with optimism and a fundamental faith in the goodness of humanity. The human social world however, is incredibly complex and Chapman does not shy away from confronting of this complexity
This book takes a wide-ranging view of our civilization and how it works, at the same time identifying major flaws in the way it functions. Primary among these is the assumption that what is good for the individual is good for the economy and the accompanying view that what is good for the economy is good for everyone. These are myths, and they fail to identify the difference between human activity at the macro and micro levels. The result of this failing is that our civilization simply does not make sense. Furthermore, since we attempt to defy well understood natural laws, our civilization is essentially crazy.
Our social world is also characterized by paradoxes. In making concrete suggestions for profound social and economic change, Chapman identifies some of these paradoxes, along with several of the myths that legitimize our behaviours and some of the metaphors that underpin our thinking. He argues that changed behavior requires that we confront and reconfigure these. This reconfiguration is part of the process of rethinking ourselves as a species.
Central to the functioning of our consumer society is the media. Chapman argues that the media spares no effort in striving to make us want things we don't need and borrow money to buy them. The first step to sustainability therefore, is to detach from the media's advertising tentacles. In pursuing this argument, the author outlines a comprehensive theory for understanding the world and a concerted plan of action for change. Fundamental to this is his vision of a conserver society based on cooperation, equity, enoughness, stewardship, democracy.
Humanity can not look to traditional leadership in the face of the impending ecological, economic, social justice, petrochemical, water, energy crisis. History shows us that. Revolution is not an option either. The choice is simple, change or wait for the apocalypse. A significant cohort of moral and ethical humanity is Chapman's hope for the future, but he is not naive about this either.
The author is well aware of the paradox implicit in his own suggestions. Humanity cannot change unless people change, but personal change alone does not lead to social change. The answer to this paradox can be found in this book, and it is not a simple one. In the end it rests on faith faith in the fundamental goodness of humanity. History may record whether this faith is well founded.
Homo sapiens must die The paradox of human survival on a finite planet edition by David Chapman Politics Social Sciences eBooks
Not an easy read but a necessary one for all. When are we going to learn that we have finite resources on our planet and that we need to stop consuming them with reckless abandon! We need to start being conservators of our planet and develop a sustainable lifestyle and society.
David has put forward some very strong arguments that I cannot dispute. He has also offered some sound solutions that are necessary to trigger change. But to do this we must jump on board now and in large numbers.
