"Doon the wynds an' up the streets,
Where revenants sought souls tae eat,
The Butcher called for twitching meat
An' Burke an' Hare did answer." -anon.
1827. A year after the Cadaver Riots tore the heart from Edinburgh. Fear still chokes the Old Town, for though the revenants were driven back with shot and steel, they still lurk in the city's shadowed closes. When night falls, they strike.
In dissecting rooms anatomists slice twitching flesh as they dream of cures and glory. For the greatest among them, Robert Knox, there is no price that cannot be met in the quest for knowledge. Behind closed doors he trades in walking death, dealing with devils to keep the flesh market supplied...
Set between the slums of 19th Century Edinburgh and the ivory towers of its academia, The Flesh Market is an almost true story of murder, mad science, obsession, and the restless dead.
"The setting is absorbing and vivid, the period fascinating and the distant echoes of this factual case are compelling in themselves, but it is the characters who bring this story to life. For a tale so concerned with death, it's bursting with human vitality." - J.J. Marsh, Bookmuse (bookmuse.co.uk)

Very well written fiction involving the Scottish grave robbers, Burke and Hare. The Flesh Market is a fanciful mix of historical fiction and horror that mostly works.Surgeons carve up cadavers in the service of modern science, while one infamous supplier of their corpses deals with the moral fallout of his trade as he fends off reanimated flesh and his more monstrous partner. The narrative gets somewhat bogged down twards the end of the book, but it is mostly a fun read for those who enjoy their horror fiction shaken, not stirred.Product details

The Flesh Market Richard Wright 9781495417160 Books Reviews
Richard Wright’s latest novel is a brilliant mix of historical fiction, cerebral horror, and dark suspense. It cleverly weaves the murderous exploits of Burke and Hare with the macabre medical pursuits of the anatomist Robert Knox, who is driven to learn why the undead are rising in 19th century Scotland. What makes this novel exceptional is that Wright recognizes that the monster in the mirror is far more dreadful than anything born of the grave and he focuses not only on reanimated corpses but on the true monstrosities of human avarice and unchecked ambition. I highly recommend this book.
good read
Not a bad read, didn't much care for the ending.
Excellent read, different story lines flowed well. I would highly recommend it to lovers of mystery, murder, science fiction, the macabre and lovers of historical fiction
I loved this zombie take on the history of the resurrectionists Burke and Hare. It was remarkably true to the actual history and characters. A delightfully dark take that gives a new perspective on resurrection and grave robbing.
This is a unique and fun zombie book. I love the mix of history and zombies! The plot takes excellent twists and turns. I like that it is narrated by different characters, though sometimes I was confused midchapter if I put the book down for a bit.
I received a pre-press copy of this book to review. I have read almost everything by this author in the last ten years--full-length novels, novellas, and short stories--but this was by far the best piece of writing I've read from him. In fact, it's one of the best pieces I've read in quite some time. While it is only February, I can almost say with utter confidence that this will be among my favorite books of 2014. Without giving any spoilers, the story is based on a true crime in the 1800s in Scotland--the Burke & Hare murders (also known as the West Point murders). While it weaves fact in with the fiction, the author clearly takes artistic liberties to fill in the details. As if the original story wasn't frightful enough, the author has brought an even darker element to a truly disturbing piece of crime history reanimation. (Zombies, if you will.) I feel the need to state that I'm actually not a zombie fan; I find the genre too overdone. But this is a clever book, weaving reality, science, history, and culture into a dark fiction that I could not put down. I highly recommend this book for anyone who enjoys historical fiction or dark fiction.
